5 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Baby Product

August 25, 2022

As a new parent, there are a million things to buy and research. But when it comes to baby products, how do you know which ones are worth your money? As we continue to honor Baby Safety Month, here are five questions to ask yourself before making any purchase.

Has There Been a Recall on the Product?

If you’re purchasing a new product at a store, then you can rest assured that a recalled product won’t be on the store shelves. However, what about the times you purchase baby products from Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or even get a hand-me-down product from a friend? When it comes to second-hand products, this is where you’ll want to do your research.

You can find out by checking the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's website. Just enter the product name or brand in the search bar. If there have been any safety issues, they will be listed here.

What is the Age Limit?

It may be tempting to purchase a baby product that you’ve heard other moms rave about, but only purchase it if it fits your child’s age limit. Products provide age limits and/or weight limits for use and are a guideline for your baby’s safety. From baby carriers and baby seats to sleep blankets and toys, each product should have an age limit listed that you should abide by.

Does it Have Instructions?

In light of our digital era, a lot of baby products don’t come with physical instructions anymore. Instead, you might be directed to download online instructions. Before you use any baby product, make sure you find the instructions and have them on-hand to review. Instructions not only give you an idea of how to assemble and use the product, but they should also include warnings about how not to use the product as well. Reading these warning signs will help you be aware of what not to do with the product.

What Safety Measures Does the Product Have?

This question is especially helpful when it comes to products that allow Baby to sit or lay by themselves. Safety measures on car seats, baby beds, exer-saucers, bouncy chairs, and strollers are incredibly important. Make sure you’re aware of these measures so you know how to properly use these products.

Is the Company Reputable?

Do some research on the company before buying their products. Make sure they have a good reputation and that they stand behind their products.

Similarly, you can often get a good understanding of a company’s reliability by reading product reviews. Before buying anything, always check the reviews. Look for products and companies that have mostly positive reviews and avoid those with a lot of negative feedback.
